What is Inclusively?
Inclusively was founded in 2006 as the Multicultural Toybox, a resource for savvy parents looking for multicultural, ethnic, or antiracist dolls, toys, and games. In 2018, it was reimagined and relaunched, and it now encompasses commentary, book and media recommendations, curricula, professional development, and other relevant resources for progressive parents and teachers struggling to develop thoughtful kids.
While Inclusively is for everyone, I write many of the articles with white teachers and parents living in red states in mind. Since moving to Idaho in 2010, I have observed that parents and teachers in conservative, majority-white areas often are in desperate need of multicultural resources. Regardless of their own upbringing, experiences, or political leanings, these parents and teachers understand the importance of preparing their children and students to navigate a diverse, more equitable world.
Who writes Inclusively?
I, Leslie Madsen, write Inclusively. I hold a Ph.D. in cultural studies and am especially interested in faculty development, antiracist initiatives, accessibility, informal science education, and gender equity. Inclusively sits at the intersection of these interests. A history professor who runs an instructional design unit at a university, I also occasionally blog about museums.
As the site grows, I also hope to bring you guest posts from experts in education and child development; activists and authors; and representatives from the progressive corners of the toy and publishing industries.
How can I support Inclusively?
Inclusively is largely a labor of love. It is currently supported through affiliate links, where I make a small commission when you purchase something I recommend. I appreciate it when you purchase goods through our affiliate links in blog posts. I am also in the process of crafting curriculum, professional development opportunities, and other resources for teachers. If you’re interested in bringing me to your school or district, please drop me a line at lesliemadsen4 -at- gmail.com to discuss your needs.
In addition, please spread the word that Inclusively is a great source for information on inclusive parenting and education.
